I Jantô [Be careful]

2024

Is curiosity a bad habit? This documentary film, "I Jantô", will tell you that it isn't, when your curiosity alerts you to the danger threatening an entire country. Mali is a vast country thousands of years old, whose geography and demography over the centuries have created harmony between cultures, religions and ethnic groups. For a long time, this cultural melting pot was considered a success, as the nation seemed unshakeable in this respect, unlike many other African countries which were plagued by ethnic or religious conflict. This idyllic picture does not disguise the fact that there have been, and unfortunately still are, conflicts, mainly related to land. However, before the serious crisis of 2012, these conflicts were settled on cultural and traditional foundations. This conflict, which began in the north, quickly spread to central Mali. Several massacres took place, sometimes against Peulh populations, sometimes against Dogon populations. Who are the perpetrators? What are the consequences for everyday life? What can be done about it? This crisis takes place far from the witness of the image. In front of the camera, the poignant testimonies, through their complementarity, bring you closer to a more complex and even darker reality, which also allows us to sense the origin of conflicts in other parts of the world, challenging our collective consciousness.
